Congenige Randhi Dilhara Fernando

Full Name: Congenige Randhi Dilhara Fernando

Born: 19th July 1979, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Batting: Right-hand batsman

Bowling: Right-arm fast-medium

Dilhara Fernando has contributed to Sri Lanka's success in the limited overs games since the turn of the millennium. Fernando has natural pace and the ability to move the ball off the seam. He is one of the few bowlers who have the ability to extract bounce from flat pitches in the subcontinent.

Initially, Fernando was a hit-the-deck sort of bowler who was aspiring to clock 90 MPH at every instance; however, he has enormously matured in recent times, developing the art of reverse swing and a well-disguised slower delivery, which he executes by splitting the fingers on the ball.

Fernando was an integral part of the Sri Lankan team that qualified to the final of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. His career has been marred by injuries but Sri Lanka's attack has always gained by Fernando's presence and extra pace.

He started off his school career as a basketball player but was spotted by the college cricket coach because of his build and height and has never looked back.

Dilhara made his Test debut in Sri Lanka in 2000, and soon made news with a five-wicket haul against South Africa in Durban. Six months later, he clocked 91.9 mph in a game at Durban. He bowled at 93.40 mph vs Bangladesh, in India. Such speeds were exclusive for a Sri Lankan bowler.

A finger injury had ruled Fernando out of the Sri Lankan squad in recently concluded ODI series in India. However, the strapping quick bowler is fit and raring to go in the forthcoming season of IPL.
