Ambati Rayudu first came into the limelight while representing India Under-19s during the tour of England in 2002. Having trained at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and won the acclaim of state team-mate VVS Laxman, there was never any doubt about this right-handed batsman's potential. Rayudu found himself on the fringes of the national team as early as 2004 when he captained the India Under-19 side that also featured the likes of Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa. He was already an established batsman for Hyderabad in first-class cricket. Rayudu joined fellow Hyderabad team-mates when the Indian Cricket League (ICL) broke out in 2007. He was out of contention for the national side, but the 24-year old gained bags of Twenty20 experience. He is expected to be more than a handful when turning out for the Mumbai Indians this season. Rayudu ended with 473 runs, the most by any Hyderabad batsman in the 09-10 Ranji Trophy season.
