Abhishek Nayar has achieved 'household name' status in Indian cricket even with the limited number of games he has played for India. An inventive left-handed batsman and clever right-hand seamer, Nayar has emerged as one of the stalwarts for the Mumbai Indians in the previous two seasons of the IPL. He has been in great form in the 2009-10 domestic circuit. Nayar scored 276 runs in two innings against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final, and followed it up with a high quality ton against a full-strength South African bowling attack in the very next week. He has proven his ability to bat in different positions in the batting order time and again, and his poise in crunch situations.
Abhishek Nayar has played an integral role in three of Mumbai's recent Ranji Trophy victories. In 2006-07, he chipped away with ample number of fifties and useful wickets, but it was in the 2008-09 season when his game reached new heights. He scored a gritty 99 in the final to set up Mumbai's 38th Ranji Trophy title, and was selected for the ODI squad to tour West Indies.
The Hyderabad-born cricketer has admitted in the past that IPL was the best thing that happened to his budding career. He sparkled in almost every match for the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural season. He scored 206 runs, with a top score of 45, took four catches and a wicket in the tournament. He was the only team member besides Sanath Jayasuriya to play every game in the first season. He is also the only team member to play in every game of both seasons. Abhishek reckons IPL's return to Indian venues will make a huge difference to his team's chances in the 2010 season. "IPL moving back to India is sure to make a big difference. There is more support when you are playing at home. The adrenaline is pumping and energy levels are higher. All those factors will definitely help. It will be a good experience," he said in a recent interview.
